    "Classic Panettone"

Panettone is a tradtional Italian cake, rather like a sweet bread, with a lovely soft, light and airy texture. Although Panettone is traditionally eaten at Christmas, this Classic Panettone is available all year round and is full of delicious sultanas and candied orange peel, just like the one in the lovely story below (one of several stories!) of the history of the panettone.

    Try it...

With a cup or coffee or glass of Prosecco...

Toasted with some Italian jam or honey...

    Ingredients

WHEAT flour, sultanas, BUTTER, EGG yolk, sugar, candied orange peel (orange, glucose-fructose syrup, sugar), natural leavening (WHEAT flour, water), inverted sugar syrup, emulsifier: mono and diglycerides of fatty acids from vegetable origin, salt, natural flavourings (orange). May contain traces of NUTS, PEANUTS and SOYA.

    History

It is 15th Century Milan and a young nobleman, Ughetto Atellani, has fallen in love with the  daughter of an impoverished baker called Toni.  To win her heart, he bakes her bread, but fills his concoction with candied lemons, orange peels and raisins.  After several days, it grows tall into a sweet-tasting, dome-shaped loaf, and its sight and profound aroma proves enough to win her heart.

It was such a success that it brought prosperity to the baker’s family. As a result, the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza (1452–1508), was able to agree to the marriage, which Leonardo da Vinci himself attended. It encouraged the spread of this new cake-like bread called ‘Pan de Toni’ (or Toni’s bread).
