Gorgonzola Piicante

Gorgonzola Piccante (200g)

A spicy blue cheese.

Gorgonzola Piccante is a really popular Italian blue cheese with a firm texture and made from cow's milk. It is thought to be one of the oldest blue cheeses in the world.

Piccante in Italian means spicy and this version certainly has a nip to it.

Product description

    Details

Gorgonzola Piccante is a stronger, more mature version of the Gorgonzola Dolce.  With less moisture and more blue, this Italian cheese has a firmer texture and fuller flavour with a peppery, spicy tang.

    "Piccante" means spicy.

    Our Ideas for using Gorgonzola

    • On an antipasti platter to start a meal or on a cheeseboard to finish: completely unadulterated – all you need is some bread or crackers and, of course, a glass of red wine.
    • In a risotto: spice up your plain risotto by crumbling in some Gorgonzola Piccante towards the end of the cooking and before you add the butter and Parmigiano.
    • On a pizza: as a topping you have a few choices as it is so versatile. You could try it as one of the cheeses in a quattro formaggi. But our favourite is to start with the tomatoes, add the Mozzarella, then crumble some Gorgonzola on top and finally add some crispy Pancetta. Yum!
    • In a chicken breast: nice and easy – cut a hole in the side of a chicken breast, stuff it with Gorgonzola, wrap the breast with Prosciutto and then bake – gorgeous!
    • In a salad: with some rocket leaves, chopped walnuts, sliced grilled peppers and crumbled Gorgonzola. All topped with a typically Italian oil and vinegar dressing. Light and nutritious.
    • Melted on cooked field mushrooms, burgers and steaks.
    • Finally, we like it with a just a drizzle of Italian Honey to complement its sharp flavour.
    • Our recipe book 'Autumn and Winter Cooking That's Just so Italian' has a delicious Gorgonzola, Walnut and Vin Santo pâté recipe.

    Ingredients

Pasteurised cow's MILK, salt, rennet, penicillium

    History

Gorgonzola is one the of oldest blue cheeses in the world.  It is said that a young Romeo, having been distracted by his lady-love, accidentally left his cheese curds to drain overnight. Hoping to hide his mistake, he mixed them in with the morning curd and a few weeks later noticed blueing. Upon tasting the cheese, he realized he had made an unintended but delicious discovery and Gorgonzola came into being.
